Confused...

So the other night, I was lying in bed thinking/talking to God and a random question came to mind. So, if God lets us have free will, then why did he "harden pharoah's heart" in Exodus and wouldnt let the Israelites go....if we have free will then why did God harden his heart????? I was really confused by this...
